Pop Art Show Melody Postma Images.

I will be showing twice in May with Melody. First in this show and then in "Snap, Crackle, Pop!" show with Jeff Schaller. I have been a fan of Melodys work since being introduced to it through Jeff Schaller a few years back.

Melody has a passion for vintage photographs and the emotion that they evoke. She also has a way with layering paint and text which is unmistakable.

Pop Art Show John Stango Images.

After being asked to participate in this show I was contacted by John Stango and his wife, Mimi. They had an interest in my work which was reciprocated upon seeing Johns' art. Stangos work combines texture, color, and a familiar era subject matter all wrapped up in pop sensibility.

John hits all of the iconic subjects in his personal style and it really hits home. His work is featured in some of the most prominent collections and his latest project for Absolut Vodka was a homerun!

John Stango is an Urban Pop Impressionist painter from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a large cult following throughout the world.  According to one critic, "John Stango made retro cool long before it was retro chic!"

Pop Art Show Jeff Schaller Images.

Jeff and I have worked on art collaborations and studio visits in the past as well as showing together at several galleries. It was only fitting that we be in this show together. Jeff has also known Peter Mars and worked with him on collaborations in the past.

Jeffs' main medium is encaustic but he has the magic touch with whatever medium he decides to use.
His work uses type Here are a few recent images of his work and look out for more information on the upcoming Snap,Crackle, Pop! show featuring Jeff, Melody Postma, and myself.

In his own words:

"I paint in the unique medium of encaustic, creating textural art pieces which incorporate representational form with the printed word. In essence, the visual and written symbols merge to create a unique aesthetic language that is both provocative and whimsical."

Pop Art Show Rodney White Images.

One of the best things about group shows is being introduced to new, inspiring artists. Although we both live in New York, Rodney White and I have never crossed paths until now and he has a new fan. Rodneys' work is beautiful and focuses on type inspired by old advertising and labeling but utilizes quotes to tell a story. His weathering technique and texture makes his look complete. I am excited to do  a studio tour and see the pieces in real life.


A short quote from Rodney about his inspiration:
When he was six, Rodney White found a box of scrap paper in the back of a kindergarten classroom. The rest is history. His work, is a hybrid composition of the things he loves – typography, numerology, poetry and vintage advertising – all set to the tune of his own personal philosophy. "Being my best self."

Pop Art Show Peter Mars Images.

I thought I would start off my posting with images by the man that is making all of this happen, Peter Mars. I have been a fan ever since seeing his work at Pop International Gallery in New York some years ago. His playful use of color and strong iconography caught my attention but then there is so much more and every time you look at his work you see something new. In his own word:

“My art comes from things I see in everyday life. TV commercials, billboards, broken down gas stations,.. wallpaper, matchpacks. I like to have fun with art. My paintings are fun to make, and they usually put a smile on your face.  When I'm in my studio I feel joyful, like I'm a little kid again, making a mess, making lots of noise, and splattering paint everywhere. 

  A lot of the imagery I use comes from my childhood and the American popular culture that surrounded it. I loved TV shows like "Lost in Space" and "Fireball XL5". I particularly liked the robot on Lost in Space. I remember how thrilled I was when President Kennedy came on TV and promised us that soon we would each have our own personal robot. I remember how he said we were gonna have robots to do this and do that, and robots to walk the dog and everything ! I just couldn't wait to grow up so I could start to work with my robot. When that didn't work out I was sad.

Pop Art Group Show at Mars Gallery, Chicago.

I will be one of the artists showing in an amazing Pop Art show opening May 1, 2010 at Mars Gallery in Chicago, Illinois.

Mars Gallery is owned by world renowned pop artist, Peter Mars. He has curated a show of the top artists in the field today and I am honored to be a part of the it. Unfortunately we will not be able to attend the opening with the baby on the way.

The show will be sponsored by Absolut Vodka (Thanks to John Stango), Details Magazine, and Pernod.

Vintage Looking Superhero Posters by Michael Myers.

My friend Colleen forwarded me a link to these amazing vintage looking Superhero posters on flickr by illustrator, Michael Myers. Inspired by Marvel and DC Comics they bring a contemporary feel while maintaining their vintage sensibility. He even went so far as to make them look aged and weathered.

I just love how minimal they are and his colors are inspirational.
