While at East Market Street Antiques the owner, Sandra, mentioned for me to check out the artwork of Brice Marden. I did a little research on his work and found out that I really like it. I am surprised that I had never seen his work as it resides in museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York.
Considered a minimalist, much of his art consists of structural grids that remind me of William S Burroughs work. Strong black and white compositions. Stark in nature that have a certain depth as if you were looking through window panes.
You can see more of his work here and here.

A Book About Death postcard exhibit. Open Call to Artists.
I will be participating in an art show in September at the Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery in New York City. Cecil Touchon invited me to be a part of the show. He will also be showing as well as a bunch of other Fluxus movement artists so it should be a fun show.
The premise of the show is that each artist contributes 500 post cards to create an unbound book about death. An homage to Ray Johnson, a celebration of Emily Harvey, a global exploration of death.
No limit to the number of artists contributing. CDs, dvds & objects accepted - send 500. Deadline: september 5!
Exhibition at the Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery in New York City. Opening will be on Thursday 10 september 2009 and the exhibition: will run through September 22, 2009.
Details can be found here and here.

The Photography of Keith Davis Young.
Keith Davis Young is a creative head from Austin, Texas. During the day he runs a design company called The Boxing Club and the rest of the time he shoots photographs. Young's photographs deal with the world that surrounds him. His work speaks to Americana but it has much more going on. His aim to capture emotion is dead on. Quiet moments, long stretches of highway, night time scenes, and small town solitude all end up in his photographs.
I found Young's work through diskurdisko blog after they wrote an article about my work.
You can see more of his work here and here.

East Market Street Antiques, Red Hook, NY.
This weekend me and the wife took a weekend retreat away from New York City up to the Catskills. We had a loose itinerary of antique stores to hit and inquired at each for a recommendation of their favorite antique spot.
In Kingston we ended up at Mezzanine Antique Center and the lovely couple who run the shop suggested that we check out Annex Antiques Center in Red Hook.
The Annex is especially charming because it is in an old movie theater converted into an antique store, but I was attracted to the store next to the Annex. The East Market Street Antiques was the object of my fascination and I was drawn in by its lovely window displays, but this was just the beginning. The store is run by a sculptress named Sandra Mackintosh who has the most amazing vision for her store. She has compartmentalized her store by item. There are hundreds of antique letterpress pieces attached to bases that are a part of her sculpture, antique railroad signs and reflectors, antique children's pails and shovels, abaci, and building stars. All arranged with the utmost care. I spent an hour and a half speaking with Sandra about her thoughts, her store and art in general. It's always refreshing to find someone who thinks far outside of the box on art as well as life. It makes me think about how much more I could be doing creatively.
A huge thank you to Sandra for allowing me to take photographs of her "museum quality" store and I hope to get up there every few months to see what amazing pieces she has on exhibit! If you are in the Catskills area do not miss her store. Even if the prices are out of your range it is inspirational to see such a well thought out space!

Richard Diebenkorn "Ocean Park" Paintings.
I have always admired Richard Diebenkorn's figurative work. His bold, expressive use of line has always attracted my sensibility and his compositions employed a structural, almost architectural weight to them. When his work transitioned into abstraction for his Ocean Park paintings he came to rely heavily on color for balance in his composition in addition to his already architectural linear quality. Here are a few pieces from the series.
You can see more of his work here and here.

Heavy Metal Flow Chart.
Not that this pertains to art in any way but I thought it was inspirational for all of the metalheads out there.
Enjoy!

Dash Snow 1981-2009.
On a sad note, this July 13, 2009 Dash Snow died of a drug overdose at the Lafayette House in New York City. I was never a fan of Dash Snow or his work but I feel that it is so sad that he became a product of the "art star" world and fell deeper into drug addiction until it over took his life.
Given his background in the de Menil art family he had tremendous resources to make great art and I never understood most of what he made. The only piece that I responded to was the book fort that he did for Rivington Arms a few years back. All opinion aside, it is sad to see such a young life ended and my condolences go out to his family and friends.
