New work by Randall Reid.

Over the past few months Randall Reid and I have been communicating back and forth about art, galleries, and life happenings. He has been kind enough to forward me jpegs of his newest work which is definitely some of his strongest to date.

These pieces incorporate more typography than some of his previous work. Partial words alluding subtle hints of where the recontextualized steel
originally came from. Rusted segments showing a long history of the elements effect on the steel and rich, bold colors that speak to a era of heavy lead based paints.

My favorite piece is "Codes" where Reid takes his recurring theme of rulers and makes them the main focus of the piece. Weathered wood rulers replace the steel normally used as the main ingredient in his work. This added to the small details make this piece visually stunning. My obsession with numbers and their meaning in society draws me to this piece specifically.

You can see more of Randall's work here and here.

"Codes" 7.25" x 7.25"

"Rs" 9.5" x 11.25"

"Do" 6.25" x 6.5"

"3.9 Acres" 13.5" x 12.5"

"Board Games" 9" x 9.5"

"Substitution" 6.75" x 6.75"

"One Eighty" 10.75" x 9"

"Industrial First Aid Kit" 10.5" x 10.75"

Randall Reid "Recontextualized - Ordered Layers" show at Nuart Gallery, Santa Fe, NM

Here are a few photos from Randall Reid's opening at Nuart Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. You may remember Randall's artwork from an earlier post on my blog. I purchased a piece of his work and we started e mailing back and forth discussing the crazy art world.

The title of his show is "Recontextualized - Ordered Layers" and the opening was Friday, April 24, 2009. The work will hang through May 10th. For the opening Randall worked with photographer Michelle Hays to photograph many of the antique toys that were included in the show. It adds another dimension to the work to see where the inspiration came from and to have these beautiful photographs accompany his artwork.

His show opening was a huge success as you can see from all of the red dots on Nuart's website. Please stop by if you are in the Santa Fe area. Nuart is a great gallery with a well lit, open space and creaky, antique hardwood floors that add character and charm.

You can see all of the work from the show here.

The artwork of Randall Reid.

I recently purchased a piece of artwork by Texas artist, Randall Reid. This being the first purchase of art in a long while makes me very happy and I want to write about it.

Reid's work consists of small boxes made of recycled cut steel, vintage rulers and wood. To me these are archaeological pieces that speak of the history of the material and where it has been for the last few decades. The small details and how they relate to the overall piece of each work is what initially caught my eye but there is much more at stake.

To me they are pieces of American history. Without directly telling the story I get a sense of specific time and place. Reid's use of vintage rulers draw me in as well because of my fascination with numbers. In the end his pieces are solid and beautiful. His color use is bold and exacting to the story he is telling.

You can see more if his work here and here and here.
