R.I.P. Department of Skateboarding, Portland, OR.
A sad day for Portland. After 8 1/2 years the Department of Skateboarding is closing its doors.
For those of you in the area don't miss the last day as it should be a good time for all.

The photography of Brian Kelley.
Living in New York I often meet some of the most talented people in their chosen field and never even realize until I get linked up to them on the computer. One such photographer is Brian Kelly, or BK as I know him. We met at Zoo York awhile back and I knew he was a photographer but never of his amazing talent. BK's photos are not your ordinary skate photos, they are so much more. He takes into account all of the small details as well as the large ones. His colors, settings, lighting, and composition all play an important part of what he shoots and the results are original and inspiring.
BK's clients include some of the best including Nike, 5Boro, HUF, 12 Oz. Prophet and Red Bull.
You can see more of his work here.

The artwork of Thomas Campbell.
Thomas Campbell is one of my favorite artists. He has a world that he has created through characters and language that is quiet and beautiful, but slightly haunting at the same time. His line quality and his color palette is impeccable. Wether he is making surf and skate films, painting, or creating mixed media art pieces it always has a specific look that is completely his own.
His work is part of the Beautiful Losers show and he has played a good part in the skateboard/snowboard/surf industry for many years.
You can see more of his work here and here.

The artwork of Dave Kinsey.
Dave Kinsey has always been on my art radar. While working in the skateboard industry from 1996-2001 he was one of the bigger names for designers who also had a career in fine art along with Shepard Fairey and Evan Hecox. I was fortunate to be living in Portland when he had a show at the Compound Gallery and then Basil Hayward Gallery in 2002 and was able to snatch up a piece of his art.
Kinsey has been very active in the gallery scene over the past few years and his style has matured as it progressed from his graphic roots replacing it with expressive brushstrokes and less structure while remaining true to his bold color palette of reds and blacks. The result is quite amazing. Kinsey still has touches of typography and his trademark characters that defined his style in the earlier years of his career but has added a new element of abstraction that fits his style perfectly.
You can see more of his work here and here.

"Terminal Solipsism" 40" x 30"
