Kareem Rizk solo exhibition at Phone Booth Gallery.

Kareem Rizk is having a solo show at Phone Booth Gallery in Long Beach, CA. If you are near the gallery be sure not to miss this one. Kareems work is amazing and he will be in attendance at the opening.

Phone Booth Gallery is proud to present "Collagephile," Kareem Rizk's long-awaited second solo exhibition in Southern California. The exhibition, which celebrates the weathered, worn and layered medium of collage, opens with a reception on June 19, 2010 from 7-10pm. It continues through July 10, 2010, and is viewable online at www.phoneboothgallery.com, and at Phone Booth Gallery's new exhibition space, 2533 East Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90803.

A mesh of vintage consumerism, post-war sophistication, and classic car culture, Rizk's work explores nostalgia with understated virtuosity. In "Collagephile," worn advertisements, fashion images, colored shapes and tactile wood surfaces put minimalism into conversations with sentimentalism. "Buy a Dream," a bottom-heavy image with a red and teal color scheme, shows a gloved, gowned woman emerging from a 1967 Holden HR. Above her, barely legible billboard-style text reads "So Bright and Beautiful." All the dated glamour represented in this image is, of course, no longer bright, but it still evinces an antiquated beauty. This sort of defunct classiness courses through much of Rizk's work. "Got Me a TV," a droll collage informed by the brazen culture of street art, shows a grinning man holding a brand new, circa-1960 television. The layered text in the background looks like the faded detritus that lines a subway tunnel's walls.

Each of the eighteen images in the exhibition takes a sleek, design-inspired approach to composition, making the baggage of cultural history look concise and cultivated. In the age of mash-ups and remixes, collage fills an essential and singular visual niche, allowing artists to re-interpret and rearrange visual history. "Collagephile" surveys that niche.

Born in Australia in 1982, Rizk is a Melbourne-based artist. He received a B.A. in Visual Communications from Monash University in 2004 and has since exhibited his art internationally. His work has appeared in numerous high-profile art and design publications, including Varoom Magazine and juxtapoz.com, and is held in private collections worldwide. Rizk will be present at the opening.

Robert Fontaine, owner of Art Modern Gallery, is having a solo show opening of his artwork. The show will be held at the Captiva Foundation Exhibition Hall and is titled "A word speaks a thousand pictures". The artist reception will take place on April 9, 2010 from 6-8PM. William Steiger "Recent Drawings" at Kopeikin Gallery, LA.

William Steiger will have a solo show opening at Kopeikin Gallery in Los Angeles. The show will consist of recent drawings and will run from March 13th - April 17th with the artist reception on Saturday, March 13th, 6-8pm.

Steigers' work is quintessential Americana and in its most pristine form. From the trains that traverse across the country, to the gridwork of old rollercoasters and Ferris wheels, his story is precise and perfect. His objects are extracted from any backgrounds and miscellaneous information to show the viewer a unique view of each subject.

Cathy Daley solo show opening at Edward Cella Gallery.

Cathy Daley contacted me with information from her new show that opens in Los Angeles tonight, November 7, 2009 from 6-9 PM at Edward Cella Gallery. The show is titled "Dance" and is aptly named. Daley's art is pure and simple. Her forms are elegant and her portrayal of motion and emotion is spot on.

Burton Morris solo show opening at Pop International.

Good friend of Jeff Schaller and superstar artist, Burton Morris will be having an opening at his New York gallery next Thursday. The opening will take place on Thursday, November 12, 2009 from 7 - 9 PM at Pop International Gallery in Soho. The show is titled "Interiors and Night Stands".

Jeff Schaller solo show at Brett Wesley Gallery, Las Vegas.

Jeff Schaller currently has a solo show running at Brett Wesley Gallery in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show is titled "Popstart" and features 9 pieces of Jeff's incredibly detailed encaustic paintings. Here is a quote from the gallery press release:

Provocative and whimsical, Schaller propels the viewer into scenes of seemingly unrelated subjects, his own captivating and complex sonatas. Simultaneously, they are pop and edgy, esoteric and direct. Using encaustic paints (a bees-wax based paint mixed with pigment) Schaller uses lost and found images, words and language, to paint with a precision and intricacy not normally found in encaustic paintings. His approach is expressionistic, contemporary, and painterly, with powerful brush strokes that are set instantaneously.

If you are in Las Vegas you should stop by the show which is being held at the Newport Lofts, 200 Hoover Ave. in penthouse suite 2109 while the gallery at 1112 Casino Center is undergoing extensive renovations.
